ArcGIS Server: Geodatabase error. The operation was attempted on an empty geometry

Last Published: April 16, 2025

Error Message

When monitoring server logs in ArcGIS Server Manager, the following error is consistently returned:

Error:
Geodatabase error: The operation was attempted on an empty geometry.
The error message in the server logs

The error was logged across multiple map services whenever a web map queried the service.

Cause

The geometry or the machine is likely corrupted, as attempting the following troubleshooting steps did not resolve the error:

  • Recalculating the feature class extent and running a geometry check.
  • Confirming that the data is registered with the geodatabase and sufficient resources are available on both the database server and the ArcGIS Server machine.
  • Verifying that ArcGIS Server is fully patched and the geodatabase version (10.8.1) is compatible with the ArcGIS Enterprise version (10.8.1) and the Microsoft SQL Server 2017 database version.
  • Running a repair on ArcGIS Server and recreating the feature classes.
  • Creating a new enterprise geodatabase, loading the data into it, and publishing the same datasets as new services to the same ArcGIS Server.

Solution or Workaround

Perform a clean install of ArcGIS Server on a new machine

When issues with ArcGIS Server cannot be resolved by troubleshooting the existing installations, performing a clean installation on a new machine provides a fresh start. This approach ensures any potential configuration errors, corrupted files, or compatibility issues from the previous setup are eliminated. Refer to ArcGIS Enterprise: Install ArcGIS Server on one machine for instructions.

Join a new machine to the existing ArcGIS Server site

Joining a new machine to the existing ArcGIS Server site improves system performance through load balancing. Refer to ArcGIS Server: Join an existing site for instructions.

Remove the old machine from the ArcGIS Server site

Deleting a server machine from an ArcGIS Server site can enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and improve overall performance, ensuring the server environment aligns with current operational needs. Refer to ArcGIS Server: Delete an ArcGIS Server machine from a site for instructions.
