ERROR

ArcGIS Pro: Failed to display the raster layer as Classify

Last Published: February 14, 2025

Error Message

When attempting to change the symbology of a raster layer to Classify in ArcGIS Pro, the layer does not render and returns the following error message:

Error:
Failed to display the raster layer as Classify
The error message when attempting to change symbology to Classify

Cause

  • The raster dataset lacks the required statistics, preventing ArcGIS Pro from determining the range or distribution of values required for classification.
  • The 'Maximum number of unique values to display' setting for the raster dataset in ArcGIS Pro is too low.

Solution or Workaround

Depending on the cause, the following options are applicable.

Use the Calculate Statistics tool to generate statistical summaries for the raster dataset

  1. In ArcGIS Pro, navigate to the Analysis tab and click Tools.
  2. In the Geoprocessing pane, search for and select Calculate Statistics (Data Management Tools).
  3. Configure the parameters in the Calculate Statistics pane.
    1. For Input Raster Dataset, select the raster dataset from the drop-down menu.
    2. Leave the other parameters as default and click Run.
  4. Remove the raster layer from the project using the Delete tool. Alternatively, in the Contents pane, right-click the raster layer and select Remove.
  5. Re-add the raster dataset to the project. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Add layers to a map or scene for instructions.
Note:
The Calculate Statistics tool can be automatically executed on the raster dataset each time the dataset is added to the ArcGIS Pro project. In the project, navigate to Project > Options > Raster and Imagery. Expand Raster Dataset > Calculate statistics. For Calculate Statistics dialog settings, select Always calculate statistics from the drop-down menu and click OK.

Increase the 'Maximum number of unique values to display' setting value

In ArcGIS Pro, the 'Maximum number of unique values to display' setting controls the maximum number of distinct raster values to be visualized within a single layer when applying symbology types such as Unique Values or Classify. Increasing the value enhances the flexibility of visualizing datasets with larger quantities of unique values for a more detailed representation of the data. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Raster and imagery default options for instructions and more information.
