ArcGIS Pro: Edit operation failed. code:500 Error handling schema request: java.lang.Exception:java.io.IOException: Server object extension

Error Message

In some instances, performing edits or utilizing a geoprocessing tool on a service fails and returns the following error message:

Error:
Edit operation failed. ERROR: code:500, Error handling schema request: java.lang.Exception: java.io.IOException: Server object extension '<Service_Capability>server' not found., Internal server error.

The error message may vary depending on the listed service capabilities. For example, if the Validation capability is not selected, the process fails and returns the following error message:

Edit operation failed. ERROR: code:500, Error handling schema request: java.lang.Exception: java.io.IOException: Server object extension 'validationserver' not found., Internal server error.

This error occurs in ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Field Maps, and in the ArcGIS Server logs.

Note:
This issue occurs in ArcGIS Pro versions prior to 3.4 and is resolved with the implementation of ENH-000137900.

Cause

The service capability check box is unchecked in ArcGIS Server Manager.

Despite the error message stating "Server object extension," the error does not correlate to the server object extension (SOE) or any .soe files created by the extension developer in ArcGIS Server Manager.

Solution or Workaround

Note:
The following workflow does not apply to the Version Management capability due to a known defect, BUG-000139575.

1. Log in to ArcGIS Server Manager. Refer to ArcGIS Server: Log in to Manager for instructions.
2. In the Services tab, select the service that returns the error.
3. Click Capabilities.
4. Under Select and configure capabilities, check the check box for the capability mentioned in the error message. For example, if the error message states "Server object extension 'utilitynetworkserver' not found," check the Utility Network check box. If the error message states "Server object extension 'validationserver' not found," check the Validation check box.
5. Click Save and Restart.
