ArcGIS Online: An error happened while appending the item

Error Message

When attempting to append survey data in ArcGIS Online, the process fails and returns the following error message:

Cause

The appended data exceeds the maximum character length of the survey form.

Solution or Workaround

  1. Log in to ArcGIS Survey123 Connect and open the original survey.
  2. In ArcGIS Survey123 Connect, click XLSForm.
  3. In the XLSForm spreadsheet, search for the bind::esri:fieldLength column, and set the desired maximum character length for the text question type.
  4. Click Save The Save icon..
  5. In ArcGIS Survey123 Connect, click Update.
  6. Click Publish.
  7. In the Publish <form> window, click Publish survey.
  8. In ArcGIS Online, append the survey data to the original survey.
    1. Log in to ArcGIS Online, and click Content > My content.
    2. Navigate to the original survey folder and click the survey's hosted feature layer.
    3. On the item page, click Update data > Update from a file.
    4. In the Update data window, click Add features and click Next.
    5. For Select data, browse to and select the file containing the data to be appended.
    6. For Location settings, specify the location type and click Next.
    7. Optionally, under Select the timezone, specify the time zone and click Next.
    8. For Select matching fields, click the drop-down arrow for each original field and match it to the field in the appended data.
    9. Click Add and complete.
