ArcGIS Experience Builder: Unable to route between stops

Error Message

Attempts to calculate directions between two or more locations using the Directions widget in ArcGIS Experience Builder fail and return the following error:

Error: Unable to route between stops.

Cause

• The input map used in the Direction widget contains a network analysis layer that does not have a cost attribute, which is a required factor in calculating the path.
• The custom locator used in the Directions widget is published from ArcGIS Server 10.9.1 that uses ArcGIS Maps SDK for JavaScript 3.x. This version is not compatible with Experience Builder, which uses ArcGIS Maps SDK for JavaScript 4.x.

Solution or Workaround

Depending on the cause, the workarounds provided are applicable.

Create a cost attribute for the network analysis layer

1. In ArcGIS Pro, create a time- or distance-based cost attribute for the network analysis layer. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Create a cost attribute for instructions.
2. Overwrite the existing network analysis layer as a map service to a stand-alone ArcGIS Server. Refer ArcGIS Pro: Overwrite a map service for instructions.
3. Publish the web map to ArcGIS Online to be used in ArcGIS Experience Builder. Refer How To: Add secure ArcGIS Server services as items in ArcGIS Online for instructions.

Use a custom locator published from ArcGIS Server 11.0 and above

1. In ArcGIS Pro, create a locator. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Tutorial | Create a locator for more information.
2. Add a server connection to the ArcGIS Server site. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Create an ArcGIS Server connection for instructions.
3. Publish the locator as a geocode service to the stand-alone ArcGIS Server site. Refer to ArcGIS Pro: Publish a geocode service for instructions.
