ArcGIS Dashboards: Layer does not meet the necessary criteria to be used for this visual element

Error Message

When configuring ArcGIS Dashboards and selecting a feature layer created from ArcGIS Survey123 as a data source for elements such as a serial chart, gauge, or indicator, the following error message is returned:

Layer '<layer name>' does not meet the necessary criteria to be used for this visual element.

Cause

The error is returned when the form view, named SurveyName_form, is used as the data source in ArcGIS Dashboards. When a survey is published, ArcGIS Survey123 creates the form view to manage survey submissions and a results view, named SurveyName_results, when survey results are shared. The form view includes editor restrictions that limit access to submitted records and prevent ArcGIS Dashboards from accessing the full dataset. As a result, dashboard elements requiring full feature access for data visualization cannot use the feature layer as a data source.

Solution or Workaround

Update the feature layer settings to allow editors to view all features

1. In ArcGIS Online or Portal for ArcGIS, open the feature layer's item details page.
2. Click the Settings tab.
3. For What features can editors see?, select Editors can see all features.

4. Click Save to apply the changes.

Use the results hosted feature layer view

The SurveyName_results hosted feature layer view is optimized for querying submitted survey responses and can be used as a data source in ArcGIS Dashboards. When configuring the element, in the Select a layer window, on the My layers tab, select the <SurveyName>_results layer.
