Error Message
When attempting to install ArcGIS Pro, the installation fails and the following error message is returned:
Error:
An unexpected error occurred while unpacking file(s). Error code: -6
The following is a non-exhaustive list of products that return the error message:
- ArcGIS Pro
- ArcGIS License Manager
- ArcMap
Cause
- The account installing the software does not have read and write permissions for the specified installation folder.
- Windows firewall is preventing the installation.
Solution or Workaround
Note:
The following workarounds may require a Windows administrative account.
Assign read and write permissions to the account installing ArcGIS Pro
- Right-click the installation destination folder and select Properties.
- In the <folder_name> Properties dialog box, select the Security tab.
- Under Group or user names, click Edit....
- In the Permission for <folder_name> dialog box, select the username or group performing the software installation.
- Under Permissions for <user_name>, uncheck the Read and Write check boxes in the Deny column.
- Click Apply.
- Click OK to close the Permissions for <user_name> and <folder_name> Properties dialog box.
Note:
Alternatively, create a new folder or select a different folder as the installation destination folder.
Temporarily disable Microsoft Defender Firewall
- Disable Microsoft Defender Firewall. Refer to Microsoft: Turn Microsoft Defender Firewall on or off for instructions.
- Proceed with installing the software.
- Enable Microsoft Defender Firewall. Refer to Microsoft: Turn Microsoft Defender Firewall on or off for instructions.
