Error 1406 Could not write value Arc Catalog

Error Message

During installation of ArcGIS Desktop, the following error is received:

"Error 1406

Could not write value Arc Catalog to
key\Products\E93843F1628446B41B3B245EEAD8CEA5\Features.

Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your
support personnel."

Cause

This error is caused by anti-virus/anti-spyware programs (e.g., Windows Defender, McAfee, Norton, etc.) that block this key from being written to the registry.

Solution or Workaround

To eliminate this error, temporarily disable any anti-virus/anti-spyware programs running on the machine. Once any anti-virus/anti-spyware programs have been temporarily disabled, re-attempt the installation. When the installation is complete, the anti-virus/anti-spyware program can be re-enabled.
