Error Message

When running the Enable Enterprise Geodatabase geoprocessing tool in ArcGIS Pro against a Microsoft SQL Server database, the tool fails and returns the following error:

Error 00837:
The workspace is not the correct workspace type

Cause

This error occurs when the target Microsoft SQL Server database does not have Read Committed Snapshot Isolation (RCSI) enabled. ArcGIS Pro requires RCSI to be enabled on the SQL Server database prior to initializing geodatabase system tables and converting the database into an enterprise geodatabase.

Solution or Workaround

To resolve this issue, enable the READ_COMMITTED_SNAPSHOT setting in SQL Server using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) before re-running the tool.

  1. Open Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) and connect to the SQL Server instance using an administrator account (as sa or the database administrator account).
  2. On the toolbar, click New Query.
  3. Copy and paste the following query into the query window, replacing <Database_Name> with the name of your target database:
ALTER DATABASE <Database_Name>
SET READ_COMMITTED_SNAPSHOT ON;
GO
  1. Click Execute.
  2. Once the command completes successfully, open ArcGIS Pro and re-run the Enable Enterprise Geodatabase tool.
