What is the difference between an ArcGIS Online Public account and an Organizational account?

Last Published: September 2, 2025

ArcGIS Online provides two primary account types: Public Accounts and Organizational Accounts. Public Accounts are free and designed for individual, non-commercial use, offering basic functionalities such as map creation, data storage, content sharing, and up to 2 GB of content storage.

In contrast, Organizational Accounts are subscription-based (purchased) and offer a more advanced suite of features. These include tools for collaboration, spatial analysis, and the ability to manage users, data, and resources within a structured organizational framework.

Public account

You can create an ArcGIS public account at accounts.esri.com .This account grants access to various Esri websites that include "esri.com" in their URLs, such as Esri Training and the Esri Community.

An ArcGIS public account offers limited functionality within ArcGIS Online. It does not include access to analysis tools, does not provide any credits for using premium services, and does not support Named User licenses for ArcGIS software such as ArcGIS Pro.

Organizational account

ArcGIS organizational accounts are set up by administrators. Generally, the ArcGIS Online administrator will add members to this account.

ArcGIS organizational accounts grant access to ArcGIS Online and, depending on the permissions set by the administrator, include access to advanced features such as analysis tools, premium content, service credits, and Named User licenses for ArcGIS software like ArcGIS Pro.
