DEPRECATION

Esri Demographics: Removal of Standard Industrial Classification Codes and Description from Esri's Business Summary Databases

Last Published: March 17, 2025

Description

Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) based business summary data is being deprecated. SIC Codes are the US government's business classification system originally designed in the 1930s. The SIC system has not been updated by the US government since 1987 and was replaced by the NAICS system in 1997.

Shifting focus to the NAICS system offers greater granularity and better accommodates contemporary industry descriptions. Highlighting the NAICS system encourages and guides clients to a modern business classification system.

Business Analyst will continue to support the Primary SIC code in Data Axle POI and it is not part of this deprecation.

Recommendation
