DEPRECATION

Concurrent Use License Type and ArcGIS License Manager

Last Published: July 1, 2025

Description

Esri is deprecating the Concurrent Use license type and ArcGIS License Manager. This deprecation affects customers using Concurrent Use licenses for ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS CityEngine.

To align with modern licensing standards, ensuring secure, permission-based access and consistent management of GIS content within ArcGIS, the primary method to access ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS CityEngine moving forward is through an ArcGIS user type. For more information on accessing ArcGIS capabilities with user types, visit the User Types page.

ArcGIS License Manager is also being deprecated along with the Concurrent Use license type, as it will not be needed to host Concurrent Use licenses or ArcGIS user types for versions of ArcGIS Enterprise 11.4 and later.

Key points:

  • Esri stopped selling new Concurrent Use licenses for ArcGIS Desktop in June 2022 and maintenance renewal quotes will switch to the equivalent ArcGIS user type beginning December 1, 2025.
  • The ability to convert an ArcGIS Pro add-on entitlement to a Single Use or a Concurrent Use license or revert previously converted Single Use and Concurrent Use licenses back to ArcGIS Pro add-ons in My Esri will be removed on December 1, 2025.
  • Existing ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Pro, and ArcGIS CityEngine Concurrent Use perpetual licenses will continue to enable software versions that will be released before March 1, 2026.
  • Beginning with versions that will be released in Q2 2026, ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS CityEngine will no longer support Concurrent Use licenses.
  • ArcGIS License Manager will continue to support Concurrent Use licenses into 2028 for the following software products according to their respective product life cycles: ArcGIS Desktop 10.8.x, ArcGIS Pro 3.6 and earlier, ArcGIS CityEngine 2025.1 and earlier, and applications requiring ArcGIS License Manager when licensed via user types on ArcGIS Enterprise 11.3 and earlier. Once these products reach the Mature phase of their respective product life cycles, updates for ArcGIS License Manager will no longer be supported.

Recommendation

Before updating to newer software versions of ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS CityEngine that will be released in 2026 and later, customers must move to a supported license type such as ArcGIS user types or Single Use licenses (if needed for ArcGIS Pro only). If a customer updates their software version without changing their license type, the updated software will not open.
