PROBLEM

Creating a feature class from the XY table in ArcCatalog creates an empty feature class

Last Published: January 27, 2022

Description

Note:
This article applies to retired ArcGIS versions 8.x. Later versions of ArcGIS may contain different functionality, as well as different names and locations for menus, commands and geoprocessing tools.

No features are added when using ArcCatalog to generate a point feature class in a geodatabase from a table of x,y coordinates. Features are added if a shapefile is specified for the output feature class.

Cause

This occurs because the XY domain of the output spatial reference is outside the bounds of the data.

This is not an issue for shapefiles because they do not have an XY domain.

Solution or Workaround

When specifying the output in the Create Feature Class from XY Table dialog box, it may be necessary to set the XY domain.

  1. Click Output Geometry Options.
  2. Click Edit in the Spatial Reference data frame.
  3. Click the X/Y Domain tab and set the appropriate X and Y domains.
