Can't connect locally to Oracle 10g on HP TRU64 UNIX

Description

There are problems connecting locally to Oracle 10g on HP TRU64 UNIX.

Cause

An HP TRU64 UNIX platform-specific Oracle 10g bug prevents any Oracle user but "sys" to establish a local connection. The Oracle bug number is 3616023, the Oracle version affected is 10.1.0.2.0. The error message is:

"ORA-12547 (TNS:lost contact)"

Solution or Workaround

• Use ArcSDE direct connect from a remote machine.
• Put ArcSDE application server on a remote machine and point it to Oracle on the HP TRU64 server.
  
• Put ArcSDE and Oracle on same machine and set TWO_TASK Unix environment variable to the Oracle database service-name.
