Can users edit ISO 19139 format metadata in ArcGIS 10.x?
Answer

No. It is not possible to directly edit ISO 19139 format metadata in ArcGIS 10.x. The ISO 19139 metadata must be converted to ArcGIS metadata format before it can be edited. Users can only do the following with ISO 19139 format XML metadata:

• View metadata
• Validate metadata against the ISO 19139 XML schema
• Convert metadata to ArcGIS format

Follow the steps below to convert ISO 19139 metadata to ArcGIS metadata.

1. Launch the Export Metadata tool in ArcToolbox > Conversion Tools > Metadata.

2. Select the ISO 19139 metadata XML file as the Source Metadata.

3. Select ISO19139_2ESRI_ISO.xml as the Translator from the <ArcGIS Installation Location>\Metadata\Translator folder.

4. Specify the new XML file to be created with the converted metadata.

5. Click OK to run the tool.

6. Launch the Metadata Importer tool in ArcToolbox > Conversion Tools > Metadata.

7. Set the XML created in step 4 as the Source Metadata.

8. Specify the file to import the metadata to or import it as a stand-alone XML file.
