Can ArcMap selection operations be interrupted or stopped once they've started?

Answer

No. ArcMap selections cannot be canceled once the process begins. This can be an issue when a selection is made against large datasets. Once the selection is started, it cannot be stopped. Large selections may take a long time to complete, and ArcMap will be unresponsive until the selection is complete.
