Minnesota county coordinate system prj files are incorrect.

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Description

Most of the Minnesota county coordinate system prj files in ArcGIS have incorrect values. For many of the zones based on the Lambert Conformal Conic projection, the latitude of origin parameter values are incorrect. The zones based on Transverse Mercator have incorrect false easting and false northing parameter values. The prj files for these counties are correct:Cook North
Faribault
Fillmore
Freeborn
Houston
Itasca North
Jackson
Lake of the Woods North
Martin
Mower
Nobles
Rock
St. Louis (North, Central, South)

Note:
The prj files for the Minnesota county geographic coordinate systems are correct.

Cause

The projected coordinate system definitions were defined incorrectly.

Workaround

Replace the existing files with corrected versions.

  1. Download MNcounty_prjfiles.zip from Related Information below.
  2. Use ArcCatalog or a Windows Explorer window to delete the files in the Coordinate Systems\Projected Coordinate Systems\County Systems\Minnesota directory.

    Note:
The Coordinate System directory is located in the ArcGIS installation directory.

  3. Extract the contents of MNcounty_prjfiles.zip into that directory. There are 188 prj files. All the files are replaced, even the ones that are correct.
