When trying to identify or select features of an ArcMap Service either no results or no features are returned, or the results are incorrect.
There are various causes to this problem, and these are listed below. Identify the cause(s) that most closely explain the problem you experience and find the appropriate workaround in the Solution section. The cause and its related Solution have corresponding numbers, for example, Cause 1 relates to Solution 1, and so on.
1. The ArcMap document being served has layers with the same name.
2. ** This issue has been resolved in ArcGIS 9.0 **The ArcMap document being served has no known coordinate system.
3. The features belong to a dataframe that is rotated. The spatial reference system of the ArcMap Service is not adjusted for rotation. The image may appear to be correct, however the spatial reference may be incorrect.
4. ** This issue has been resolved in ArcGIS 9.0 **
The data source of the features is a double precision coverage and you are using ArcIMS 4.0.
** This issue has been resolved in ArcGIS 9.0. **
The selected layer references a personal geodatabase (MS Access file) and the query returns greater than 100 features. In this case, the values are returned, but the the selected features are not highlighted.
6. ** This issue has been resolved in ArcGIS 9.0 **
The ArcMap Service sub-layer is referencing raster data. For example, the layer you are trying to identify is an image.
You will need to access the ArcMap document to see if any of the above conditions are true.
- If there are layers with the same name, you will need to give the layers unique names, save the map, and reserve.
- If the map has no known coordinate system, you will need to give the map a known coordinate system.

- If any of the dataframes are rotated you will need to undo the rotation. ArcMap Server does not fully support data frame rotation.
- If you are using ArcIMS 4.0 and the data source of the features you are having trouble with is a double precision coverage you may need to convert the coverage to a shapefile or to a geodatabase feature class.
- This problem occurs when using ArcIMS 4.0 or 4.0.1 and using the HTML viewer. Java viewers do not experience this problem.
- Raster layers of an ArcMap Image Service cannot be identifed. This is a known limitation.
