Can not create a bullet leader label

Description

Bullet leader labels formerly available in ArcView 3.x require a manual procedure for ArcGIS 8.1, 8.3, and 9.x.

Note:
It is not possible to create a bullet leader label in ArcGIS 8.2.

Cause

This is a known issue.

Workaround

1. Right-click the desired layer in the Table of Contents and select Properties.
2. Switch to the Labels tab.
3. Under Text String, select the attribute field related to the label.
4. Click the Symbol button under Text Symbol.
5. Click the Properties button.
6. Select the style and format of the label font in the Editor window.
7. Switch to the Advanced Text tab.
8. Check the Text Background box and click Properties.
9. Select Line callout for Type.
10. Select the style of the leader line under Style.
11. Uncheck the boxes for Accent Bar and Border.
12. Click the Leader Symbol button.
13. Click the Properties button for the Symbol Selector window.
14. Select Cartographic Line Symbol for Type.
15. Select the line color and width under the Cartographic Line tab.
16. Select the second Line Decoration, the arrow on the left, under the Line Properties tab.
17. Click Properties under Line Decorations.
18. Click the Symbol button.
19. Select the symbol for the bullet.
20. Click OK for all the windows.
21. Select the Label tool from the Drawing toolbar.
    

    Labels feature with their attributes by clicking on them.

    
    
    
22. Set the type of Placement and leave 'Use properties set for the feature layer' for Label Style in the Labeling Options window.
23. Close the window.
24. Click the feature to label. A bullet leader line appears with the specified attribute label that was set.
