BUG

ArcMap 10.1 drawing performance is slower with SQL Server 2012 geodatabase with Geometry or Geography type data

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Description

There is query and draw performance degradation when using the Geometry or Geography spatial type with SQL Server 2012 as compared to querying the same data from SQL Server 2008 and 2008 R2 databases. This affects all rendering and editing operations. The performance degradation varies with the complexity of the operations and the corresponding number of underlying queries. The performance difference is negligible for simple operations. For more complex operations, the performance difference becomes noticeable.

Cause

Esri has worked with Microsoft to identify the source of the problem: a difference in query support functions built into SQL Server 2012.

Esri has modified its software to reduce the performance degradation. The change is available with ArcGIS 10.2.

Workaround

None.
