ArcGIS Pro: Failed to create <Feature Class>. Value doesn’t fall within Domain: <Domain>

Error Message

When creating new features such as points, lines, or polygons with the following options:

• uses a field with the Allow Nulls unchecked,
• uses a Domain, and
• the Default is blank,

The operation fails and the following error is returned: 

Error:
Failed to create <Feature Class>. Value doesn’t fall within Domain: <Domain>

Cause

This error arises from the initial configuration of the feature. When creating a new feature class, if a field is set up to use a domain, disallows null values, and lacks a default value, encountering the this error is expected. Essentially, the system notifies users that the provided value does not fall within the specified domain. If a domain is assigned to a field, the default value for the field must be selected from the domain values.

Solution or Workaround

Once the error appears in the Create Features window, follow these steps:

1. In the Create Features dialog box, on the Templates tab, click the arrow at the right to open the active template pane and specify the attributes for the feature.

2. In the Active Template section, the feature is listed and displays a list of the values from this field's domain.

3. From the list of values for the domain, select the value that best fits the point, line, or polygon. When the value is selected, the feature will turn green. Click the back arrow at the top left to return to the Create Features window and complete the process.

4. After this is completed, you can create all the features that apply to the domain and value selected.
