PROBLEM

ArcGIS Full Motion Video (FMV) add-in does not allow users to add an archived video file

Last Published: April 26, 2020

Description

When users have installed the ArcGIS Full Motion Video (FMV) add-in, users cannot see any MP2, MP4, MPG, or other archived video files. When using the browse window, ArcMap doesn't display any files with these extensions.

Cause

The reason for this is that the video file types are not inherently recognized by ArcMap or ArcCatalog (they are not native to the software) and therefore they must be added manually.

Solution or Workaround

ArcMap must be completely closed and all archived video file types must be added manually to ArcCatalog.

  1. Close ArcMap completely.
  2. Open the stand-alone version of ArcCatalog.
  3. In ArcCatalog, click the Customize menu > ArcCatalog Options.
  4. In the ArcCatalog Options dialog, on the File Types tab, click the New Type button.
  5. Create a new file type for all of the following file extensions:

    .PS MPEG-2 Program Stream
    .TS MPEG-2 Transport Stream
    .MPG MPEG File
    .MPEG MPEG File
    .MP2 MPEG-2 File
    .MP2 MPEG-2 File
    .MPEG2 MPEG-2 File
    .MP4 MPEG-4 File
    .MPG4 MPEG-4 File
    .MPEG4 MPEG-4 File
    .H264 H.264 Video File
    .VOB ESD File
    .MT2S MT2s File
