When ArcGIS Explorer is launched on a desktop computer, the application attempts to make a connection with ArcGIS Online. However, the following error message is displayed.

Error:
ArcGIS Connection has stopped working.

In some instances, Windows also returns the error below.

Error:
Unable to make ArcGIS connection.

Cause

This issue may be caused by one of the following:

  • A proxy server or a firewall prevents a connection to ArcGIS Online.
  • The ArcGISConnectionBin.exe file becomes corrupt.

Solution or Workaround

Use one of the following workarounds:

  • If a proxy server exists, disable it temporarily, and add the proxy server information to establish a connection to ArcGIS Online.
    1. Navigate to the Windows Control Panel: Network and Internet > Internet Options > Connections > LAN settings.
    2. In ArcCatalog, navigate to Customize > ArcCatalog Options > Connections.
    3. Use the proxy server information from LAN settings and add the information to ArcCatalog.
  • Add exceptions to the firewall to allow the generic domains provided.
    • *.arcgis.com
    • *.arcgisonline.com
    • *.amazonaws.com
    • *.virtualearth.net (for Bing maps)
    • *.esri.com
  • Uncheck Automatically detect settings from Internet Explorer: Tools > Internet options > Connections tab > LAN settings.
Note:
Esri is ending support for Internet Explorer. While customers may continue to use Internet Explorer, migration is recommended as support cannot be provided for Internet Explorer 11 or Microsoft Edge Legacy specific issues and new releases are no longer be tested with these browsers.
  • Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Explorer (x86)\bin, and rename the ArcGISConnectionBin.exe file.
