ArcExplorer 3.0 has been detected on this machine, please remove before installing

Error Message

After unloading all of the pieces for ArcIMS 3.0 and ArcExplorer Java 3.0, the install wizard for 3.1 yields the following message:

"ArcExplorer 3.0 has been detected on this machine, please remove before installing."


A Registry key on the server was not successfully deleted during the uninstall.

Solution or Workaround

The instructions below include making changes to essential parts of your operating system. It is recommended that you backup your operating system and files, including the registry, before proceeding. Consult with a qualified computer systems professional, if necessary.

Esri cannot guarantee results from incorrect modifications while following these instructions; therefore, use caution and proceed at your own risk.
  1. Click Start > Run.
  2. Type REGEDIT in the input box and click OK.
  3. Click Registry > Export Registry File to make a back up copy of the registry.
  4. Click Edit > Find, or press Ctrl+F.
  5. Search for the string ArcExplorer.
  6. Highlight any references to ArcExplorer Java 3.0 on the server and click Edit > Delete.
  7. Search for ArcIMS 3.0 and delete any references on the server.
Be very careful not to delete anything in the registry except for the entries indicated above. You can seriously compromise the integrity of your operating system by deleting the wrong entries.
