Error Message

When opening ArcGIS Desktop Help, the following error messages are displayed:

"An error message has occurred in the script on this page"

"Page will not display"

Cause

Microsoft operating system and browser updates and patches have closed security leaks that affect the HTML Help functionality.

Solution or Workaround

  1. Go to Microsoft's Windows Update site and scan for updates. Download any critical patches it recommends.
  2. Reinstall the HTML Help run-time components from Microsoft by installing Q811630 for Windows 2000 or for Windows XP. Search for Q811630 and select the link for the appropriate operating system.

    Note:
If installing or reinstalling Q811630 does not solve the problem, try deleting temporary Internet files and cookies in Internet Explorer by going to Tools > Internet Options > General tab and clicking the Delete Files and Delete Cookies buttons.

  3. Update your browser to the most current version.
    Microsoft Download Center - Internet
    Note:
Some users have found that even with Q811630 already installed, installing additional hotfixes will result in errors. In this case, reinstalling 811630 after installing other patches or hotfixes has solved those errors.
