Summary
To visualize data in a diverse ways, ArcGIS Online provides a variety of styles that can result in more meaningful and visually appealing maps. Apart from the default symbols, there is the option to use custom images. This article describes two methods to add custom symbols to a web map that are retained when the web map is embedded in a web site.
Procedure
Use a publicly-accessible URL for the custom symbol
- In the web map, navigate to the feature layer.
- Click Change Style and go to Options for the symbol style.
- Click Symbols and go to Use an Image option.
- Paste the URL, and click the plus sign (+).
- Click OK.
- Save the web map.
- Click Share and select Everyone (public).
- Click Embed in Website and copy the embed HTML to paste into a web page.
Note:
For best results, use square images (JPEG, PNG or GIF), not greater than 120 x 120 pixels. If the size of the image is greater than that, it is adjusted to fit. This may cause some distortion of the original image.
Upload the image to ArcGIS Online Content
- Sign in to ArcGIS Online Organization.
- Upload the image to ArcGIS Online Content. Refer to the ArcGIS Online Help topic: Add Items. This adds the image as an item in your content.
- Go to the item details page of the new item, click Share, and check Everyone.
- Copy the URL of the item
- Open the web map
- Click Change Style.
- Click Symbols and select the Use an Image option.
- Paste the URL, and click the plus sign (+).
- Click OK.
- Save the web map.
- Click Share and select Everyone (public).
- Click Embed in Website and copy the embed HTML to paste into a web page.
