404 error when downloading Microsoft Office files from ArcGIS Online

When downloading Microsoft Office files stored as item attachments, resources, or generated outputs in ArcGIS Online, the download may fail and display a 404 error in Microsoft Edge:

404 - File or directory not found. 
The resource you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.

Cause

The issue occurs when Microsoft Edge is configured to open Office documents directly in the browser rather than downloading them to the local machine.

Solution or Workaround

If Microsoft Edge is currently set to open files directly in the application, follow these steps to disable the feature:

1. In Microsoft Edge, click the three dots in the upper-right corner.
2. Select Settings.
3. Click Downloads.
4. Disable the Open Office files in the browser setting.

Alternatively, use a different browser.
