PROBLEM

11 bit images display black in ArcGIS

Last Published: April 25, 2020

Description

When previewing or displaying an 11 bit image in ArcGIS, it displays completely black.

Cause

An 11 bit image is a 16 bit image that does not use the full range of available values. An 11 bit image only uses cell values of 0 to 2047, and a 16 bit image can store values from 0 to 65535. Since an 11 bit image only uses a small portion of the available range, it will appear very dark when displayed.

Solution or Workaround

Calculate statistics for the image.

Creating statistics enables ArcGIS to use these images more efficiently by using a smaller range of input values. Instead of values from 0 to 65535, only values between 0 and 2047 will be considered, and the contrast between cell values will now display.

  • Right-click the image in ArcCatalog and choose Calculate Statistics.
  • Click OK on the Calculate Statistics dialog box.
