  1. [coordinate systems, geodesy] A standardized system for determining elevation or depth on the earth's surface that defines a starting point (origin) and measurement system (or unit of measure). Common examples of vertical reference frames include the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD 88), the North American-Pacific Geopotential Datum of 2022 (NAPGD2022), and ellipsoidal heights.
