  1. [information systems] An abbreviation of keyhole markup language. An XML-based format used to describe geographic features, complex 3D representations, and associated display attributes—such as color, style, or visibility. Keyhole markup language was developed by Google and the specification is currently maintained by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC). A compressed—or zipped—KML file is known as a KMZ.
