A compromise, modified azimuthal projection with a graticule in the shape of an ellipse, balancing distortion best at latitudes closest to the equator. The Aitoff projection is typically used for small-scale or thematic maps where visual balance is more important than precise area or angle measurements. The Aitoff projection was developed by Russian cartographer David A. Aitoff in 1889.
