Would like to request the same ability as prior versions of ArcMap where the default output is the same as the default input for geoprocessing tools.

With ArcGIS 10, default output is set to the default GDB by design.Workaround
Right click the ArcToolbox > select Environment Settings > Workspace and clear or set a current and scratch workspace. But this setting is saved only within the map document or the application so you have to repeat this step everytime you open a new ArcMap. The output will be saved in the defined workspace in Environmental settings, which may be different from the input workspace.Steps to Reproduce
