Workaround

By replacing the line in the above code: pMxDoc.UpdateContentswith the following the user was able to work around the ArcMap crash: Dim pContentsView As IContentsView Set pContentsView = pMxDoc.CurrentContentsView pContentsView.Refresh pLayer 'pLayer is ILayer
