When editing an attribute of a feature class and reconciling and posting to the DEFAULT version, the following error appears when trying to delete child version: "Unable to delete version. The version is currently in use. [SDE.test]".

Workaround

Delete the version using ArcCatalog.--Close ArcMap, re-open ArcMap, and delete the version.
