Workaround
Uninstall the ArcGIS 9.2 software, reinstall it, then install Service Pack 5. If the same error is encountered during the uninstall process, the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility will need to be used to remove it, then the ESRI software can be reinstalled, uninstalled the normal way via Add/Remove Programs, reinstalled again and then Service Pack 5 applied.
