Bug

Updating the item description on a layer in a map document (.mxd) or map package (.mpk) in ArcMap does not bring over the item description for the same layer when the map document or map package is opened in ArcGIS Pro.

Additional Information

This bug was reported with ArcGIS Pro 2.0. In that version of the software the operation described by the user was behaving as expected. In ArcMap, map layers do not have their own metadata. When the user does what they describe in ArcMap (right-click the layer and click Data > Item Description), it is difficult to remember that what they are seeing is the data's metadata not the layer's metadata. The ArcMap map layer actually has a small amount of metadata in that it has Description and Credits properties as well as a descriptive Title that are all provided in the map layer's Properties dialog box. The only chance of keeping this information, if users had chosen to provide it in ArcMap, is to transfer this information to the layer's metadata at the time the MXD or MPK or LYR or LPK is imported to ArcGIS Pro. Meanwhile, in ArcGIS Pro, map layers can have their own full metadata separate from the data's metadata. In ArcGIS Pro 2.0, what the user is actually seeing when they look at the Properties dialog box for the map layer after importing the MXD is the content that was imported from the ArcMap map layer's properties. Users might get a title that matches the name of the map layer, and Description and Credits if they were provided in the original ArcMap map layer. If they weren't provided in ArcMap, which they won't be if the provided reproducible steps are followed, these properties continue to be blank in ArcGIS Pro. However, users can add the file geodatabase to the project and then see the feature class's metadata. In newer versions of ArcGIS Pro, when the MXD is imported, the ArcMap map layer's properties continue to be transferred to the Pro map layer as its metadata. However, users have the option in the map layer's Properties dialog box to have the layer reference the data source's metadata instead. This way, if users used the Description and Credits properties in ArcMap, users do not lose any information, and users have the choice of which set of information the users want to continue using. This is described in this help topic under the heading "View content on the Properties dialog box": http://pro.arcgis.com/en/pro-app/help/metadata/view-and-edit-metadata.htm

Workaround

Manually bring in the point feature class to ArcGIS Pro from the Catalog pane and right-click the layer Properties > Metadata, the metadata is updated.
