Updating a field alias using Update Definition in the ArcGIS REST Services Directory does not update the corresponding item in ArcGIS Online.

This issue will not be addressed in the current release cycle. If this is still a concern, contact Esri Support Services.

Workaround

  1. Update the alias in the item details page or in Map Viewer via the pop-up.
  2. Edit the item JSON using ArcGIS Online Assistant.
