Thank you for bringing this design issue to our attention. You can open, edit and save your previously created custom variables; however, the create custom variable feature was not designed to use saved custom variables to build a new complex custom variable. We will work to improve the current design to make it easier to use and understand. Thank you again for your valuable feedback.
