A direct connection will still work if the .axl file is edited manually to provide the direct connect parameters. One workaround is to create a three-tier connection using ArcIMS Author, add some data, and save an .axl file. This .axl can be edited and the direct connect will work. The direct connect only does not work when the connection is attempted directly from Author.Steps to Reproduce
