Workaround

In Version 10.0, Please use the below mentioned steps to export the XML successfully:1. Catalog window > Right click on a folder > New > XML document2. Import the workspace metadata:a. Right click the new XML document > Item Description.b. Click the Import button, pick your workspace as the source, and FROM_ARCGIS for import type. You'll see some errors you can safely ignore. The other workaround available is:Upgrade to ArcGIS 10.1. Createnew FGDB for in 10.1, import all the data from the original 10 GDB into it, and then to enter in the metadata manually/copy-paste and then was able to successfully export the metadata. The upgrade will then work for the gdb. For the feature classes, one can run the Upgrade but no Export button will appear. You will need to make a small edit (i.e., I added a few characters to the Title) and save. Now the Export button is there (with the others).
