Unable to alter fields length in ArcGIS Desktop or ArcGIS Pro. The error message is returned, "Error: Unable to alter the field's length. The maximum allowed for any data type (8000)."

Workaround

  1. Add a new text field with 12000 character size.
  2. Run the Field Calculator on the new field.
  3. Delete the old field.
  4. Rename the new field and its alias.
