Known Limit
After review by the development team, it has been determined that this issue is related to a known limitation with the software that lies outside of Esri's control. The issue's Additional Information section may contain further explanation.
Additional Information
The sample listed in the widget shows that the required format is a URL pointing directly to a KML:
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/feed/v1.0/summary/2.5_month_age_animated.kml
The sample provided in this defect is pointing to the data endpoint of an ArcGIS Online item:
https://www.arcgis.com/sharing/rest/content/items/[item ID]/data
KMLs or KMZs that are added to ArcGIS Online should be added using the Search tab in the Add Data widget.
Workaround
Add the KMZ file to Google Earth and then export the file as a KML layer. The KML layer can be added from file to the Web AppBuilder for ArcGIS Add Data widget in ArcGIS Online.
