The Upgrade Geodatabase tool fails with the error, "Could not update server tables and stored procedures. (sde_branches : Error (-220)  DBMS error code: 0 Invalid column name 'branch_guid'.

Additional Information

Dropping the sde_branches table solves the upgrade issue. The sde_branches table must not exist before ArcGIS Desktop 10.5.

Workaround

Perform an incremental upgrade from geodata ArcGIS Desktop 10.4 > ArcGIS Desktop 10.5.1 > ArcGIS Desktop 10.6. or ArcGIS Desktop 10.6.1 or ArcGIS Pro 2.2.
