Additional Information
The issue is non-reproducible with ArcGIS Pro 2.8. The user experience (UX) is improved for tracing with starting points created from the user-defined feature classes in the release of ArcGIS Pro 2.8.
The issue is related to the use of a user-defined feature class to place starting points which does not include a populated FEATUREGLOBALID field. When the FEATUREGLOBALID field is not present in the schema or not populated with the GlobalID of an associated network feature, the input feature class is used to intersect the network feature geometry and place the starting point.
An alternative solution is to add the FEATUREGLOBALID field to the feature class that is used to place the starting points and ensure this is populated with the GLOBALID of the associated network feature.
Workaround
Upgrade to ArcGIS Pro 2.8.
