The Trace tool adds additional vertices if the feature is being panned while tracing the edge from the other feature.

This is an artifact of adding trace without a selection.Workaround
After selecting the trace tool right click to open the context menu and check on Trace Selected Features. This is the 9.x trace behavior and it will require you to select the feature that you want to trace. This will allow you to zoom in and pan and not introduce extraneous vertices. Otherwise you need to make sure the entire feature or edge you are tracing is in the current extent of the map when tracing.Steps to Reproduce
