The thumbnail applied to a group layer's metadata is not maintained after creating a layer package from the group layer.

Workaround

  1. Share the layer package. Once the package is created, extract the .lpkx file to a new folder.
  2. Navigate into the esriinfo folder. Open the thumbnail folder, and delete the thumbnail.png in it.
  3. Copy and paste the desired image into the folder, and name it thumbnail.png. It must have that name and it must be a png - this does not work for jpgs.
  4. Navigate to the directory that contains the esriinfo folder and other content files (p12, p20, etc.). Highlight all the folders, and send them to a compressed folder.
  5. Rename the compressed folder to a desired name, and change the file extension from zip to lpkx.
