Additional Information

There is some overhead when switching to async processing. The threshold or algorithm described here: https://pro.arcgis.com/en/pro-app/latest/help/data/services/edit-web-feature-layers.htm#ESRI_SECTION1_D8A9777E5C2B40FCA7FEDB8683B75E28 was chosen to avoid edit failures due to payload size or timeouts.

Workaround

Ensure the geoprocessing services used for async are set to have at least one instance running at all times to reduce startup time on a 'cold' service'. Consider breaking edits into smaller payloads based on the threshold described here: https://pro.arcgis.com/en/pro-app/latest/help/data/services/edit-web-feature-layers.htm#ESRI_SECTION1_D8A9777E5C2B40FCA7FEDB8683B75E28
