Additional Information

There is a minor user interface (UI) issue to be addressed separately. When the .mxd is converted, the file name's extension in the dialog box is not seen, whereas it can be seen when a new map layer is created from a shapefile dataset in ArcGIS Pro. However, this difference only exists in the string when viewing in the Properties dialog box. Behind the scenes in the data connection that is used by the map layer to access the data source, the data connection for both map layers is exactly the same regardless of what string is shown in the dialog box. As such, this has no effect on the SDK and the ability to change or access the layer's data source. Here is a code snippet from the ArcGIS Pro SDK that shows how to access the name of the feature class that is the data source of a feature layer: var flyr = MapView.Active.Map.GetLayersAsFlattenedList().OfType().FirstOrDefault(); QueuedTask.Run(() => { var fcName = flyr.GetFeatureClass().GetName(); });
