The Metadata Importer geoprocessing tool and the Import Metadata tool do not import the metadata from a personal geodatabase (.mdb) feature class to the metadata of a .mxd.

Workaround

1. Open ArcMap 10.6.1.
2. In the Catalog pane, right-click and select Item Description.
3. In the Item Description dialog box, click Save. This saves the .xml document for ArcMap.
4. Use either the Metadata Importer geoprocessing tool or Import Metadata tool.

• The Import Metadata tool
  1. Reopen the metadata for the .mxd and the feature class within the personal geodatabase. Please note that the metadata for the .mxd and feature class do not match. An error message stating similar to what is found the Import Metadata attachment is received.
  2. In the Catalog Pane, select a .mxd document and click Import.
  3. In the Import Metadata tool, choose the feature class as the Source Metadata.
  4. Select any Import Type (Note: Each Import type resulted in the same problem).
  5. In the Target Metadata, select the .mxd document.
  6. In the Catalog pane, expand the personal geodatabase and select a feature class. Right-click and select item description. Insert any text in the Summary, Description, Credits, Use Limitations, and other fields.
  7. Open ArcMap 10.6.1.

1. Open the Metadata Importer geoprocessing tool.
2. In the Source Metadata box, insert the feature class.
3. In the Target Metadata, insert the .mxd document. An error message stating similar to the Metadata Importer attachment is attached.
