The error message “Could not rebuild indexes on the dataset (could not get a lock)” is returned when rebuilding indexes with a Python script on a feature class that a referenced feature service is published from.

This issue is no longer reproducible in ArcGIS Pro 3.5 and above.Workaround

Note: This issue is not reproduced in ArcMap.
